I chose the topic of special education in schools because I think there is a lot to talk about in that broad topic. I have been working with special needs students and their families for many years now. One family in particular that I worked with for a few years was a single mother with two disabled children. One of them had a severe case of cerebral palsy and the other was mentally challenged. This family had many struggles and helping them out for so long really opened my eyes to many different aspects of life that families with disabled children have a harder time going through than other families. The materials, machines, tools, and the caring for the boy with cerebral palsy is extremely expensive. The times when you would normally sit and relax, you have to spend caring and helping the boy.

Seeing all of this for a few years really opened my eyes to the problem of funding for special education in schools. Which led to me choosing this subtopic of funding for special education in schools. The government needs to fund these certain programs more to help the school and local districts that are also suffering from this major problem. This problem doesn’t only affect the students with the special needs but it affects everyone else as well. Classroom sizes are larger because of layoffs due to lack of funds by government, students all get less attention in their classes. Also there is many less extra-curricular activities available for people to participate into because of the lack of funds by the government. The more funds that special education programs receive from the government, the better off everyone will be.
