Special Education In
Schools
Life After
High School
How do special education programs work to prepare students for the transition to adulthood?
In regards to special education, people generally discuss their concerns with its effectiveness for children progressing from elementary to high school. But what happens after high school? This page discussing the topic of preparation for life after high school for these special needs students. There is a platform of debate in regards to the level of preparation provided by special education programs. Some debate that special education programs fail to provide students with adequate preparation for life with their disabilities. Other debate that it is difficult to prepare students for the future with different learning disabilities. I believe that there could be more preparation provided by the institutions to ensure that these student are given the most optimal opportunities possible. The goals should be to send these students off with a sense of direction and goals.
There are also some areas that have provided students with the opportunities to enhance their future through additional programs. These additional programs allow students with learning disabilities to channel their focus into different skill sets that can help them to obtain jobs for after school. Colleges also are opening their doors to new programs that provide assistance for special needs students, allowing them to obtain a college education and experience. These programs are providing opportunities that used to never come to the minds of families with special needs students, for the possibility of college used to seem near impossible or improbable for learning disabilities.
I think that schools should also focus on these student’s lives after high school. Their disabilities don’t stop at a diploma, they will continue to need help as they progress into this next stage of adulthood. By providing additional support, I believe that these students will be open to numerous more opportunities that will allow this to achieve their goals. Graduating high school should not be just about receiving a diploma, but receiving opportunities for the success of their futures.
